Let me tell you about a magical place called Beardsley Farm. It’s located in Knoxville’s Mechanicsville neighborhood in what’s known as a “food desert,” or an area without options for healthy and affordable food within a three mile radius. The folks at Beardsley describe it thusly:
“Beardsley is an urban demonstration farm that grows organic produce and houses bee colonies and free-range chickens. All the food we grow is donated to local food pantries, volunteers and others in need of fresh produce. We work with community members and provide tools to help them grow their own food and learn about the financial and environmental benefits of home food production.”
I was lucky enough to spend a few days at Beardsley Farm, interviewing and filming the lovely folks who work there for a video we produced at Community Television. Oh, here it is!
Tonight, Beardsley is hosting its third annual Snow Day fundraiser at Barley’s, complete with a soup cook-off, music and a silent auction. Check out their website for more information.
