Make Your Own Tea Bags

9 Mar

It’s surprisingly easy to make your own tea, and even to package it in individual tea bags for easy brewing or little gifts.  You can find inexpensive individual disposable tea bags online or at some health food stores- you fill them halfway with tea and then iron them shut– or if you want to get fancy (and I did, of course), you can create a tag by punching a hole in any small piece of paper or cardstock, tying it to a string and placing one end of the string into the bag before ironing it closed and stapling it to secure the string.  I took gift tags and hand-stamped them before securing them to the bags.  Of course, you can also brew loose tea with a tea ball, infuser mug or reusable tea bags for a more sustainable option.

Here are some easy tea recipes to get you started:

Spice Tea (makes about 2 cups)

  • 1/2 orange
  • 1 T honey
  • 1/2 t ground cinnamon
  • 1 T cloves
  • 1 cup black tea

Slice orange into thin slices.  Baste with honey, sprinkle with cinnamon and dry in a 175 degree oven for two hours, flipping after one hour.  Slice orange and mix with other ingredients.  Store in an airtight jar.

Lavender, Fennel and Lemongrass Jasmine Tea (makes 1 cup)

  • 1/4 C lavender
  • 1/4 C fennel
  • 1/4 C lemongrass
  • 1/4 C jasmine tea

Mix all four ingredients and store in an airtight jar.

Chamomile Rose Tea (makes 1 cup)
1/2 C chamomile
1/2 C rose petals
10 drops rosewater

Mix chamomile and rose petals.  Add rosewater and mix to thoroughly distribute.  Store in an airtight jar.
